Sometimes, I feel like Harry Vanderspeigle, the extraterrestrial who crash-lands on Earth in Resident Alien and gradually learns the secrets of humanity. Humans are a tough nut to crack, and like Harry, I spend a good amount of time wondering about these peculiar beings I’ve taken up with. What drives their pack? Why do they love or hate other humans? Or dogs, for that matter?

Humans bond for the strangest reasons.

Sometimes, it’s proximity and a desire to protect one another. I get that. There’s strength in numbers, which is why we dogs travel in packs.

But that’s where the similarities end. Humans can belong to more than one pack. A single human can herd with one group that loves Dachshunds, another that hunts for bargains in bougie boutiques, and a third for over-exposed photographers. Weird stuff. How’s a puppy to understand all this?

Religions

Sometimes, humans gather because of common beliefs. They build churches, synagogues, gurdwaras, mosques, etc. It seems to be driven by their faith that there is life after death. Something to…
