The best lesson I learned in 2024 is that I should detach from everything. I don’t want to waste my energy on insignificant things over and over again. Whenever something happens, even if it’s bad, I’d like to just say, “What a tempest in a teacup. Chill out, this isn’t worth the drama!”

Last year, my realization was about not attaching myself to things or material possessions. But this year, it’s broader. I’ve learned to detach from people, relationships, status, and anything tied to worldliness.

As we get older, we realize that we become more disappointed with almost everything. It’s not the world that changes, but our expectations, and it’s hard not to feel let down by it all sometimes. In the end, we’re left with suffering and pain.

“Perhaps suffering is just as great a benefit to him as well-being? Man is sometimes extraordinarily, passionately, in love with suffering, and that is a fact.” — Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Notes from Underground

Sometimes, suffering becomes the embodiment of inner emptiness, leading us to seek fulfillment or peace. But in doing so, it often feels like we’re trapped in a cycle of suffering, unable to break free.

There comes a time in life when we start questioning how the world works. It’s the point where we begin to wonder about the nature of life, society, and the systems that govern us. It might come after a personal crisis, a loss, or simply as we start to see the complexities and contradictions of the world more clearly. It’s a search for truth in a world that can sometimes feel uncertain or chaotic.

Suffering can be a sign that we are too attached to things. It’s these false attachments that cause our pain. We hold on to people, success, or things, thinking they will make us happy or that we can’t live without them. But the truth is, everything changes.
