Medium, and Self
Why I’m On Medium
Took me a while, I know.
I will admit. I wasn’t looking for much when I first discovered Medium. I was in high school, online during the pandemic, and didn’t have much to do, so I thought, why not try writing?
I had a lot of stories to tell, but not a lot of people who were going to listen to them. I had a lot of things to say, but not a lot of places where I could say them. I didn’t think writing was going to bring me money, but inspiration, or a bit of closure.
Social media was never my thing, but Medium felt very different.
When I first got here, I just wanted to write. I didn’t hop on very often, and when I did, it was just to share something. It took me a couple of months before I realized that there was an algorithm behind this whole deal, which, by the way, I still don’t understand and never will.
That said, reading was fine with me too. I’d just fallen in love with reading during the pandemic years — not reading for school, but recreational reading. Reading the work of fellow writers naturally inspired me to write more, and gave me more to write about.
As ironic as it sounds, reading and writing are what build this sense of community. I felt the community only as I’d started sharing more, opening up more about…
