One Takeaway from “It ends with us”

Not simply love, but respect is the cornerstone of all relationships

The first step towards empowerment is understanding when to give up.

I am deeply moved by Lily Bloom, the main character, and her journey after watching “It Ends With Us.”

Her mother, who had been abused by her father, chose to remain in the marriage despite the abuse. This decision had a lasting impact on her life. Growing up seeing this, Lily made a pledge to never live the same way again.

However, as fate would have it, she ended up being married to a man who continued to follow those same habits.

It's easy to think that love is stronger than everything. We are taught that love is sufficient to restore broken hearts and heal wounds. However, love loses its significance when it is tainted by mistreatment and disdain.

Even though Lily was pregnant, it wasn’t an easy decision to make, but it was evident. She decided to leave the toxic relationship because she valued herself more than continuing it not because she was afraid or felt guilty.

I am reminded by Lily’s narrative that love is meaningless without respect.

Lily’s fortitude disproves the notion that love is the solution to all problems even though like so many women, we may cling to it.

Lily went because she realised respect was necessary, but her mother stayed because she thought love was enough.

“Love without honor can be fatal; it can shatter a person’s spirit. The cornerstone of any relationship ought to be respect.” This feeling sums up Lily’s story’s lesson quite well.

“If someone does not respect your dignity, it is not enough to just love them.”

Lily's decision to leave is a potent warning to never accept anything less than what we are worthy of. Although love is significant, our self-respect should never be sacrificed for it.

I learned a very clear lesson from this movie: when it comes to love and life, we should always put ourselves first when self-respect is at risk.

My self-worth is affirmed by Lily’s bravery, and I hope it does the same for you.
