Spring is the season of renewal, blooming flowers, and…allergies! Seasonal allergies don’t just affect us humans; our furry friends can suffer too. As dog lovers, watching our pups struggle with allergies can be heart-wrenching. My poor red healer gets so miserable come springtime. Her skin drives her absolutely insane! I won’t take her back to the vet anymore because every vet I go to refuses to give her any other treatment than a steroid and they break havoc on her bladder every time. So just like with my own medical treatment, I went natural. There are natural ways to help your dog find relief from seasonal allergies. Let’s talk about them!

Understanding Seasonal Allergies in Dogs

Seasonal allergies, also known as atopic dermatitis, can make your dog’s life quite uncomfortable. Common signs include scratching, licking, watery eyes, and even sneezing. These allergies are often triggered by pollen, grass, mold, or dust mites flourishing during certain times of the year.

Natural Remedies for Relief

1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: The Anti-Inflammatory Powerhouse

Incorporate omega-3 rich foods into your dog’s diet. Fish like salmon or sardines are great sources, but if your furry pal isn’t much of a fish fan, flaxseed oil can be a good alternative. Omega-3 helps reduce inflammation and soothe skin irritation.

2. Regular Baths: More Than Just A Clean Coat

Frequent baths can remove allergens from your dog’s skin and coat, providing immediate relief. Opt for a gentle, natural oatmeal shampoo, which is known for its soothing properties. Remember, over-bathing can dry out their skin, so find a balance that works for your pet.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar: A Versatile Elixir

A diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV) solution can be a quick relief for itchy skin. Mix equal parts water and ACV in a spray bottle and apply it to the affected areas. However, avoid open wounds as it might sting!

4. Coconut Oil: Nature’s Moisturizer

Coconut oil is not just for humans; it’s a fantastic moisturizer for dogs too! Apply coconut oil directly to your dog’s skin or add it to their food. It can help improve skin health, reduce allergy symptoms, and even boost the immune system.

5. Quercetin: The Natural Antihistamine

Quercetin, a flavonoid found in fruits and vegetables like apples and broccoli, acts as a natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory. While it’s not a quick fix, incorporating quercetin-rich foods into your dog’s diet can help manage allergies over time.

6. A Clean Environment: Prevention is Key

Regularly cleaning your home can reduce allergens significantly. Wash your dog’s bedding in hot water weekly, vacuum often, and consider an air purifier to keep the air clean.

7. Herbal Remedies: Nature’s Pharmacy

Herbs like nettle and licorice root have been known to offer relief from allergy symptoms. They can be brewed into tea and added to your dog’s food or water. However, it’s crucial to consult with a holistic vet before introducing any herbs to ensure they’re safe for your dog.

Can You “Can” The Relief?

And for those who love canning and preserving, here’s an idea — why not create a homemade, natural dog treat that incorporates some of these allergy-relieving ingredients? While you can’t can the juice directly, making dehydrated snacks or frozen treats with ingredients like omega-3 rich fish, apples, or coconut oil can be a great way to help your dog fight allergies while also giving them a delicious treat.
