Can happiness be seized? If so, how can I get hold of it? Where can I find happiness? These are the regular questions I ask myself. Is happiness merely an emotion, or rather a reward for your actions? It is not like happiness can be bought from a convenience store. So what is happiness and how can I achieve it?

Looking back at my life, it was a roller coaster of emotions. Happiness, sadness, guilt, and pain have all been good friends of mine. But happiness, in particular, is a peculiar one. Often, we mistake happiness for simply not being sad. Are you happy with your life? Or is it just that you don’t have anything to make you sad? All other emotions, like having a loving girlfriend, come to you when you are lonely. But for happiness, you have to step out onto the ground and search for it. But is happiness something searchable? Is happiness something that can be pursued? According to Buddhism, happiness comes from accepting what you have, which I agree with to some extent. We human beings are never content with what we have. We always crave more, and when things don’t go as planned, we become demotivated and sadness sweeps in.

In pursuit of happiness, we tend to forget the things we already have in our life. In search of love, we sometimes forget to love. In search of money, we actually forget the value of things around us. Often, we become so immersed in finding happiness that we fail to see things slipping away from us. We completely forget what happiness actually means. Sometimes, I think about how bugs are attracted to light bulbs. Are they really following the light? Or are they just waiting to collide with the hard glass of the light bulb? Similarly, can people actually pursue and find happiness? Or is it just a hard dead end like the light bulb on the other end?

The way I see it, happiness is never something to be pursued. It never was and never will be. Happiness is not a destination; rather, it’s the journey itself. The path to happiness is the path itself! And often, it’s the little things along the way and around you that make the journey beautiful. You may pursue a certain person in your life, thinking that you will be happy together in the end with this person. But little do you see how people around you, including your friends and family, love you.

We often set complex goals in our lives in a feeble attempt to find happiness. We have this notion that happiness comes after achieving something big in our lives. If I get married to this girl or boy, I will be happy my entire life. If I get this job or admission to university, I will be the happiest person alive. Well, let me tell you this, it’s not true. I’m not denying that these things don’t bring you happiness. They surely do. You work hard for something, and you get it. You have every right to be happy. But the issue with such lofty goals is that most of the time, such happiness is not enduring. It tends to fade away once you achieve it. And then you choose the next high goal, and another after that, until you start to feel weary. But if you start to find happiness in the little things, things around you start to change.

Sometimes, a smile can make you happier than a dollar bill. A kind word when you are down does more wonders than any dopamine boost you can afford. Can happiness be pursued? The answer is no, it can’t be. Can it be achieved? Yes, it can! Remember, only you can find happiness for yourself.

In the end, it’s what comes from within you and the little things around you that decide your fate of happiness. Sometimes happiness is right around the corner of your house. It’s just you have to look at them closer and take time to notice them.
