Sydney Opera House lights up with images of firefighters in support of Australia’s bushfire crisis
The projections, which began [on January 11th], are a tribute to the firefighters and communities who have suffered through months of searing temperatures and smoke.
Tens of millions of dollars have been raised for affected communities, with the bushfire crisis reaching international attention. (9News Australia)
Someone escapes from poverty every second
Poverty Clock visualizes the approximate state of world poverty in real time, showing one person escaping from extreme poverty every second. It estimates where each person moving out of poverty lives (Indonesia, India, Algeria…) and what their gender might be, using statistical averages.
The visualization also shows the rate at which people fall into extreme poverty. Happily, the number escaping poverty dwarfs the number falling into it. (HumanProgress)
JetBlue plans to go completely carbon neutral on all U.S. flights
JetBlue announced this week that it plans to go carbon-neutral on all domestic flights starting in July, a first for a major U.S. airline.
The company’s plan involves both taking steps to reduce its flights’ overall carbon emissions and increasing its investment in carbon offsets, which are environmental projects that reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
“Air travel connects people and cultures, and supports a global economy, yet we must act to limit this critical industry’s contributions to climate change,” chief executive Robin Hayes said in a statement. “We reduce where we can and offset where we can’t. By offsetting all of our domestic flying, we’re preparing our business for the lower-carbon economy that aviation — and all sectors — must plan for.” (The Washington Post)
