Why This Stock Photo Site Gives 10% of Its Revenue to Charity
Rawpixel was started with the goal of bringing the best design resources to everyone empowering people to do good.
Ten years after Rob Churchill took his first photos traveling through Asia with a backpack and his first digital camera, he now believes he is ready to fulfill his goal.
For this week’s 10 Good Questions, Goodnet spoke to Rob to find out what motivates him and his team and how he tries to make the world a better place.
Can we change the world with creativity? The Rawpixel team believes we can. They realized they aren’t happy with the imbalances that still exist today, which is why the company decided to pledge 10 percent of its revenue to the international children’s charity Hope for Children.
“With the help of our community we are eager to explore ways we can use our talents for good,” Rob told us. “If you are involved in any charities or initiatives that could benefit from our design resources, please get in touch and we will try our best to help.”
1. WHAT IS YOUR ORGANIZATION’S MISSION?
Our mission is to bring inspirational design resources to everyone empowering people to use creativity for good.
2. WHAT MAKES YOU GUYS DIFFERENT FROM THE REST?
We are obsessed with making the best design resources. Other design resource agencies are run by entrepreneurs and business people that don’t truly understand what it takes to create the designs that are useful for today’s society. After becoming the world’s leading supplier of stock images, we realized we could do a better job by creating our own website where we can connect directly with our customers and start to use our skills to do good. We now have a team of around 50 creatives all working together to make the best resources.
3. WHAT THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR ORGANIZATION?
Creative. Real. Fair.
4. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
After graduating, I spent several years traveling and working around Asia. Coming from rural England, this was an incredible eye opener for me. I was fascinated by the differences in culture and incredible sites like The Great Wall of China or Jaisalmer’s medieval fairytale fort in the Thar desert. I also become aware of the poverty that still exists in many countries and how lucky I was growing up to have basic things like healthcare, education and time for play.
After teaching English in Japan and China for several years, I discovered a way to turn my passion for travel and photography into a dream job. Traveling with a backpack and working out of hostels I started supplying stock photo sites with digital images. I was drawn to the incredible beauty and generosity of people who often had very little for themselves. Ten years later I hope that with Rawpixel, we are now in a position where we can start giving back.
5. WHO’S YOUR FAVORITE GOOD DOER FIGURE?
Elon Musk. Whether you agree with his business motives or not I am inspired by his “can do” attitude. By taking risks and trying to innovate, we can discover new ways to have a positive impact on the world around us.
6. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
Traveling to awesome places and meeting fascinating people.
7. HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS WITHIN YOUR ORGANIZATION?
By creating a business that is good for its staff, it’s customers, and the community.
8. FACEBOOK OR TWITTER?
Pinterest. Pinterest is like the visual google and is full of creative inspiration.
9. WHAT DO YOU WANT GOODNET USERS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR ORGANIZATION?
Our goal is to create the most awesome design resource site and creative community. We have diverse and authentic images, PSD mockups and graphics. We believe everyone should have access to the best design resources not just the privileged. To achieve this, we have created free memberships along with our premium ones and have pledged at least 10 percent of our revenue to Hope for Children, who are doing an incredible job empowering children around the world to reach their potential.
10. HOW CAN PEOPLE GET INVOLVED?
We want our creative resources to have as much impact as possible. If you work with or know of a charitable organization that could benefit from our design resources please get in touch. We will be pleased to set you up with a free premium membership.
