LEGO began as a toy workshop in 1932, but has since become one of the largest toy makers on the planet.

On a standard day, they produce over 112 million bricks, or 1,300 for every second you’re reading this article.

And as you can imagine, its now a pretty large business, making DKK 43.7 billion in 2020, with sales up by 21% on the previous year.

There are now over 3,700 different types of LEGO pieces, including some specialty pieces like:

  • minifigures, with over 4 billion of them made since 1978 (although, 4 in 5 of these are male)
  • miniature tires, with 318 million made per year (which makes LEGO the largest tire manufacturer globally)

This might now have got you thinking, what LEGO should I build myself? Well here are a few ideas…

  • How about one of the largest LEGO sets on sale? The Map of the World is the biggest with 11,695 pieces, while second and third place go to the Titanic and Colosseum (with 9,090 and 9,036 pieces, respectively)
  • The most expensive LEGO set on general sale is the Millennium Falcon at £699.99 (although some special edition sets go for a lot more)
  • You could try and beat the tallest LEGO structure ever built, which was made in Italy at 35 metres tall and with 550,000 bricks (you can see a video of it here)
  • Or maybe replicate James May, in 2009, who made an entire house made out of 3.3 million LEGO bricks
  • Maybe virtual bricks are more your thing. In that case, you could recreate the set of the LEGO movie, although this would require the equivalent of 15 million pieces to do so
