Elon Musk bought 9.2% of Twitter this week, becoming the largest shareholder of the business. But does he know what he’s buying?

Twitter is a social media platform originally founded in 2006. Following its first tweet by Jack Dorsey, their founder, roughly 5,000 tweets per day were made during 2007

By May 2009, Twitter had reached its 1 billionth tweet and was recording 500 million tweets per day by 2013 - that’s over 1.8 billion tweets per year!

Twitter recorded 500 million tweets per day by 2013 — that’s over 180 billion tweets per year!

How many users do Twitter have?

  • Today, Twitter has over 400 million users, with 96% of these using the site at least monthly and 53% logging in daily (the definition of an active user)
  • This number of active daily users makes up 8.8% of active users across all social media platforms
  • America is Twitter’s largest market, with 73m users, followed by Japan (c. 56m) and India (c. 22m)
  • And Twitter’s users are predominantly male, making up 68% of users. This is compared to 57% and 49% for LinkedIn and Instagram, respectively

And who has the most popular Twitter account? Barack Obama with 130m followers!
