General Availability Announcements

  • Google Compute Engine Preemptible VMs — Substantially discounted virtual machine instances ideal for distributed, fault-tolerant workloads. The service is already being used across applications such as genomics, simulations, and video rendering.
  • CDN Interconnect — This service provides direct interconnect links between CDN providers and Google’s edge network.
  • New US East Region: — Hello East Coast! Google Cloud Platform launched its fourth region, located in Berkeley County, South Carolina.
  • Regional Google Cloud Storage — You now can put your storage buckets closer to your compute instances with general availability in any of the four regions (asia-east1, europe-west1, us-east1, and us-central1).

Beta Announcements

  • Google Cloud Dataproc — Managed Spark and Hadoop clusters that are quick to start, scale, and shutdown with each of these operations taking an average of 90 seconds or less.

We published documentation for Getting Started with Ruby and Getting Started with Go, complementing related documentation for Node.js and Python. The guides walk you through your first app deployment, and connect you with resources for using storage, setting up authentication, logging, and more.


Satish Talim translated his study notes into a useful series (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) that teaches you how write a REST API using Go, Cloud Endpoints, and App Engine.


Learn how to configure a Python app with SQLAlchemy to run App Engine apps locally with Andrea Mucci’s tutorial.


Getting Started with Kubernetes on Google Cloud by Aaron Tribou walks you through bringing up a single-node cluster (~$6/month) in just a few minutes.


The team behind Cloud Spin, which you may have seen at Google Cloud Platform Next, published a three-part series (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) on how they went from concept to live demo. Check out some of the upcoming variations with stabilization, and watch Cloudspin on GitHub as they plan to release the complete demo code.


Google App Engine with a custom domain just got better! Check out this recent announcement that SSL can now be configured within the Developers Console.

The Cloud Minute series continues on the Google Cloud Platform YouTube channel. Since our last roundup, a new video went live on adding uptime alerts in Google Cloud Platform. You never know when one minute will save you ten, so head over to the playlist.


Cycle Computing visited The Rich Report podcast to talk about how the Broad Institute is using Google Cloud Platform preemptible VMs to perform highly complex genome analysis using machine learning techniques, and to work towards potential breakthroughs in cancer research.


Frances Perry, a tech lead at Google, presented during the @Scale conference about combining streaming and batch analytics using Google Cloud Dataflow, and demoed the service by building a Dataflow pipeline to process mobile gaming logs.


Brian Dorsey joined the Coffee With A Googler series to talk containers and managing them using the open-source Kubernetes project.
