As a Google Developer Expert (GDE), it’s essential not only to delve deeply into technology but also to share knowledge and guide the community’s development.
Standing out among numerous tech professionals and expanding your influence is a goal every GDE should focus on.
Here are the key points:
- Explore the GDE Field and Build an Influence Network
- Combine Technology with Industry to Create New Synergies
- Establish a Personal Handbook and Accumulate Influence
- Be Your Own First Reader
Explore the GDE Field
True influence comes from deep exploration of the essence.
As a Flutter & Dart GDE, I first think about what Flutter is used for.
It is used to build cross-platform applications.
Therefore, when building influence, I start from how to use Flutter to create an excellent app.
An excellent app usually has the following features:
- An attractive app store page
- Beautiful design
- Smooth animations
- Clear and maintainable architecture
- Gamification elements
From these points, there are many derived fields in addition to Flutter’s own knowledge base:
- App Store Optimization (ASO)
- Design styles, such as Material Design
- Animation frameworks like Rive
- Architecture design suitable for small, medium, and large companies
- Developing games or game components in apps using Flutter, such as Flutter Flame
These derived fields are often overlooked.
When everyone is focusing on some “black technology,” I share pure knowledge.
Google’s I/O conference presentations never involve any “black technology” or “magical modifications.”
In this way, my influence network is established.
Combine Technology with Industry
The combination of technology and industry is like the confluence of two rivers, always sparking new ideas.
Technology serves business, and its applications vary across industries.
For example, my industry is web3.
Besides Flutter, I can also establish influence in the web3 industry.
The most crucial aspect of building influence in web3 is systematization, as the web3 industry is very new and rapidly evolving, with much knowledge lacking systematic organization.
Therefore, a good systematic tutorial or article can attract many users.
For example, my web3 introductory course has helped many beginners get started because there were hardly any similar articles in the Chinese community before.
Through these articles, I was even followed by Binance founder Yi He.
Combining the industry with Flutter can also generate many sharing opportunities.
Many libraries in web3 need to be ported to Dart, making this a great topic for sharing.
Establish a Personal Handbook
Accumulation is the cornerstone of success.
I have a personal handbook that includes my introduction, career vision, records of all my speeches, articles, and podcasts.
By compiling them in one place, anyone interested in me can easily find all my work.
With regular investment of time, this accumulation can grow significantly over 1–2 years.
Be Your Own First Reader
To move others, you must first move yourself.
For speeches, be your own first audience; for articles, be your own first reader.
This means preparing your presentations carefully.
Articles and presentations share the same principle.
I use AI to optimize my articles (fixing typos, improving formatting) and read them at least five times to ensure they flow smoothly.
Make sure every article and presentation is systematic, with a clear context, best practices, and final conclusions.
Share publicly with pure content, as influence is already your reward; avoid excessive advertising.
Therefore, I don’t really like WeChat public accounts that take on various soft advertisements for money; I prefer Medium for its pure, content-rich sharing.
Conclusion
These strategies can help you expand your influence in the tech field while maintaining pure and high-quality content.
I hope these suggestions are helpful to you and wish you continued success on your GDE journey.
