Remote-sensing capabilities and the accessibility of satellite and aerial imagery have dramatically increased in recent years, but journalists are only beginning to explore the news-gathering potential of these techniques. The Center for Investigative Reporting is teaming up with Google for TechRaking 20: News from Space, a day-long workshop Sept. 8 in San Francisco that will bring together journalists and experts in remote sensing and science communication. We’ll showcase work already being done in this field and present ideas for how journalists can adopt and adapt many untapped techniques.

And because there’s currently no manual for doing journalism with remote sensing, let’s build one! We’ll end the day by starting work on the Space Journalism Handbook, a new open-source resource for journalists who want to effectively and responsibly use remote-sensing techniques.

More details on the day and how to apply below.

We promise sweet swag for those who attend, including this limited- edition mission patch.

Send Michael Corey an email to mcorey at revealnews dot org. Please be sure to include a description of why you’re interested and what past experiences you may have had in journalism or remote-sensing.
