Broken Glass by Liz Nielsen for Google’s Canvas Project

Google Empathy Lab was founded in 2015 out of a desire to create enlivening technology informed by empathy, resilience, and wisdom of heart. The Lab sources from deep humanity, social and emotional resilience and the wisdom of nature to infuse Google’s most advanced technologies with the invisible “laws” of harmony.

We listen, learn and make. Our work focuses on the everyday living laboratories of our hearts and minds, relationships and communities. Within these contexts, we ask hard questions and listen deeply, blending social science with creative methods, mixing rigorous research with intuition.

We pioneer unconventional explorations with scientific and cultural partners, notably NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, UC Berkeley’s Social Interaction lab, the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, Stanford’s Motivation Lab, Brené Brown, Geoff McFetridge, Krista Tippett and Ram Dass.

Empathy Lab has been invited to address audiences around the world at Sundance, The Aspen Institute, Wisdom 2.0, Forbes, O’Reilly, MIT, Harvard, Semipermanent, FWD50, C2 and SXSW. Our work has been featured in TIME, VICE, WIRED, The New York Times, New York Magazine, NBC, and ABC.

We believe empathic, conscious design can be an act of care and courage. We proudly add heart to Google’s greater values of equity, resilience, freedom, and meaningful progress.

We’re glad you’re here. Say hello, we love new friends. empathylab@google.com

Google Empathy Lab is located on Kō Hawaiʻi Paeʻāina (Hawaiian Kingdom), Chumash, Tamien Nation and Ohlone lands.
