50 lessons. 15 tools. 13 languages. Introducing the revamped News Lab Training Center
We’re excited to announce our revamped Training Center at g.co/newslab, which now hosts more than 50 individual lessons. From Google Maps to Fusion Tables to Google Trends and more, the lessons are presented in a low-bandwidth, card-based format that is mobile friendly and designed to meet the needs of busy journalists looking for quick answers.
We’ve heard time and again from journalists that while they value continued education, it can be difficult to carve out time to invest in learning new tools. Although we’ve trained more than 50K journalists across 39 countries in Google’s tools related to storytelling in newsrooms, we knew we wouldn’t be able to reach everyone. It was important to create a curriculum that allowed us to reach journalists anywhere and to enable them to learn at their own pace.
Those insights inspired us to begin building out our online training center earlier this year. In the most recent revamp, we’ve organized our lessons into courses around broader journalistic needs: data journalism, multimedia storytelling, and fundamentals.
We’ve also added courses on topics like verification and fact-checking and digital security, which are increasingly becoming critical topics for the modern newsroom. To ensure our tools are accessible to a global audience of journalists, we’ve translated the site into 13 languages.
In the coming months, we will also be expanding our courses around Immersive Storytelling, Mobile Journalism, Monetization and Analytics. You can check g.co/newslab regularly for the most up-to date training content or follow us on Twitter at @googlenewslab. (Even better, set yourself up a Google Alert to stay notified when we have updated content.)
We’re always exploring additional ways to help journalists stay informed about our tools. If you’re working on a project using one of our tools, are interested in integrating your tools into our existing workflow, or would like use to work more closely with your organization, we’d love to hear from you.
Our team’s mission is to collaborate with journalists and entrepreneurs to build the future of media and it’s never been more important to provide journalists with every opportunity possible to stay ahead of the changing landscape. We welcome your suggestions on what else we can do to provide the best resources possible.
