You may ask yourself what a GoogleDSCParty is? The mysterious format is an idea of Irene Ruiz Pozo who created and designed the event in order to propose a common format for Google Developer Student Clubs from different countries. The idea behind it was to create a space for students where they could share knowledge with all attendees and therefore everyone interested could learn from the different fields during the workshops organized by different clubs.

At this event, the Google Developer Student Clubs from the same country gave talks and held workshops dedicated to everyone who wanted to participate and was keen to learn more about different technologies. The format contains learning while having fun at the same time.

Irene Ruis Pozo in her own words is saying “I created this event so that the GDSC community could have their own event where they could get together to teach others what they have learned over the months, giving talks, workshops, showing the results of their projects, etc. This event also allows other communities such as the Google Developer Groups, Women Techmakers and Google Developer Experts to gather together with the GDSCs, thus being able to share experiences and help creating quality events.”

The importance of this event lies not only in social gatherings but also its principal factor was sharing knowledge and uplifting everyone’s skills. The event that lasted 2 and more days brought a wide variety of people, skills and knowledge. It helped to meet people with different IT backgrounds and experience to enjoy time together with plenty of various topics and tips on how to become a better programmer.

So here we go with the experience shared by the organizers of GoogleDSC Party from 3 different countries: Spain, Ukraine and Georgia.

The first GoogleDSCParty in the world

GoogleDSCParty Spain 2021

The event was held on 27th and 28th of March.

In this first GoogleDSCParty, we had 16 speakers who dealt with the following topics: Web, Android, Flutter and Machine Learning/AI.

The first day of the event has been watched in total 402 times and the second day has brought even more interest as 541 views.

The event was inaugurated by Laura Cincera (GDSC European Program Coordinator) and Irene Ruiz Pozo (GDSC Mentor of Spain, GDG Lead of Murcia and GDG Co-organizer of Cartagena and Women Techmaker Ambassador), we talked about what a GoogleDSCParty is and about the Google Developers Student Club Community.

During this edition we also had 4 very special speakers:

  • Carlos Azaustre: is a Telematics Engineer. JavaScript developer and web technologies trainer. Google Developer Expert on Web. He spreads programming knowledge through YouTube.
  • Andreu Ibanez: GDG Lead of Lleida and Co-organizer of GDG Spain
  • Cynthia Gálvez: WTM Ambassador and GDG Lead of Zaragoza.
  • Alfredo Bautista: Developer. Working with Flutter on HandCash. Co-organizer of GDG Marbella and FlutterConf

These were the Developer Student Clubs speakers from the different universities in Spain:

María José Bedoya is a last year student of computer engineering at the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Gijón, as well as a very restless person for what she became lead of the GDSC at the same university with interest in computer science as something more than development of web applications and power to share knowledge and learning with others.

In this talk we went a little retro and make an 8 ball, which we could use to ask funny or more serious questions like: whether we should eat a whole chocolate bar or not. This talk showed how we can make a game in unity in a simple way, with our own components.

Andrea Álvarez, is a third-year student of the degree in Engineering in Industrial Design and Core Team Designer at GDSC Valencia, with Vladyslav Mazurkevych, a last-year computer science student and current Lead of the GDSC Valencia.

They have brought us a talk about the phases of design and what to look for when designing.

Alex Alemany is a computer engineering student at the Barcelona School of Informatics at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He is also the lead of the GDSC UPC, organizer and founder of the Google Developer Group Menorca. With an interest in artificial intelligence and quantum computing, he introduced to us the latter and did a small demo with Qiskit.

In this talk we could see what quantum computing is, what it serves us for and how we are going in its development. We also taught Qiskit, a python framework for quantum computing created by IBM and open source.

Javier Cano, a video game development student at the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Madrid and Core Team member of the GDSC UPCT

He has brought us a workshop where we can learn to program a game simulating the situation of Perseverance on Mars.

Corentin Rozet is a third-year computer development student at Epitech Barcelona and a professor at the same university. He is also the GDSC Lead of this university

He has introduced us to DevOps work and especially to the use of Docker, a tool created at his school.

Javier Alcaraz is a student of electrical engineering at the School of Industrials of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena and Core Team member of the GDSC UPCT and Hugo Martínez, a first-year electronic engineering student at the Industrial School of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena and GDSC Lead of the GDSC UPCT

They have brought us a workshop on how to work with Jetpack compose for the development of Android apps.

Ángel Moreno is a student of computer science and statistics engineering at the Valladolid School of Informatics at the University of Valladolid. He is also the GDSC Lead of the GDSC of Computer Engineering School of Valladolid and Secretary of the University Group of Informatics. With an interest in artificial intelligence and Android, he will make an approach to reinforced learning through the classic game of Snake.

In this workshop we created our own Snake game using JavaScript so that an Artificial Intelligence learns to play it better than people. We have used Tensorflow JS to create our artificial intelligence.

Inés Abad Ramón is a 1st year student of 3D Modeling and Animation at the University of Murcia and a CoreTeam member of the GDSC University of Murcia, mostly interested in sculpture and 3D modeling. Julián Fernández Calvo is a 3rd year student of Computer Engineering at the University of Murcia and a CoreTeam member of the GDSC University of Murcia. He is passionate about technology and programming in various languages, such as java or python. Vicente Marín Lorencio is a Computer Engineering student at the University of Murcia and a CoreTeam member of the GDSC University of Murcia, specialized in computing and intrested in Artificial Intelligence, both from a theoretical and practical point of view, although he also has faculties as a software developer in various programming languages.

In this presentation we could see how from photogrammetry you can create your own model and rig it, that is, add bones to it to be able to animate it.

We also did Kahoots in which we raffled off various Google products.

This event was very interesting since both the GDSC Leads and the special guests were able to share their knowledge and experiences through this event. It was a great opportunity for the leads from different Google Developers communities came together, especially GDSC Leads.

GoogleDSCParty Ukraine 2021

Written by Rostyslav Makhanko

What’s happening when all of the GDSCs gather in one place? Of course GoogleDSCParty! On the 15th and 16th of May, Ukrainian GDSCs were celebrating the first-ever GoogleDSCParty Ukraine. The event has started with the coding battle where participants were solving algorithmic problems. The winner (Artem Naumovich from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv) has solved 9 of 10 problems.

Then we hosted a live stream on YouTube with talks about the most popular Web and Mobile development technologies. Oleh Melnychuk, GDSC Lead of National Aviation University, brought his knowledge about JavaScript to tell how modern web development looks like now and what students who want to learn it should know. Roman Korostenskyi, GDSC Lead of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, prepared a smooth talk about how to boost mobile development with Jetpack Compose.

After the break we were back with the panel discussion with current DSC Leads where they told about how they started coding, what are their favorite programming languages and technologies, what did they organized during the year in their GDSCs, and what’s the plan for the future.

For the late activities, we moved from YouTube to Zoom and Discord to meet with attendees of the event. For Random Networking we have prepared topics about tech but not only it, to give participants the word and hear what they like the most about their favorite frameworks, what they do in a free time, what they would change in the educational system. Also, together we played some board games to break the wall online and just make fun.

On the closing session the music band The Streechers lead by Ihor Melikhov, GDSC Lead of Chernihiv Polytechnic National University, played the song from their new album. Winners of the coding battle were announced.

After the event, all of the participants got delivery from GoogleDSCParty Ukraine and partners with the cool swag and presents. Winners of the coding competition have got their well-deserved special prize packs!
