With a population of about 1.34 billion, India is certainly a force to reckon on world forums. Be it politics, cinema, sports or anything under the sun or the moon (How can we forget the heroics of our ISRO), India has established itself on the world map!

The country known for giving the Sundar Pichais and the Satya Nadella’s of the world, has also over the years given birth to sports legends like Sachin Tendulkar, P.T Usha, Sania Mirza, Mariyappan Thangavelu(2016 Gold medal in paralympic) and the likes. Being a cricket crazy nation, we have always bled blue, but off late there has been a volley of young athletes across all sports, that have taken the front stage and garnered much fanfare and accolades for their work.

Amongst the newest edition of such young players are some female athletes who have against all odds fought hard to leave footprints in the International arenas. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, let us honour these women who have been the torch bearers of women sports, making India proud!

SANIA MIRZA — TENNIS

She gave Indian Women Tennis a new life as she went on to become the World №1 in Tennis Women Doubles Ranking. Born in Maharashtra, Sania has also been one of the most sensational and influential sportsperson from our country and also the only woman to be ranked as India’s №1 player both in singles and doubles. Oh boy! Isn’t she too pretty to.

These were just a few names from an amazing list of women who through their determination, perseverance and hard work have made it to the top of their fields. Rest assured, Indian female sports persons are no longer subdued or lacking in skills required to foray into the International platforms. But as a country of about more than a billion, we need to spread awareness, provide them with the required infrastructure and motivation so that they can shoot for the moon.

All hail, our sports women! India will always be proud.
