Peer review isn’t just an interesting idea—it’s vital for students to learn critical thinking skills.

No matter what you teach, peer review can be a valuable tool in your courses. But how do we know if it’s actually working? How does any instructor know if we’re incorporating peer review effectively?

The truth is that most of us aren’t. In fact, the number one skill students need to give a good peer review is a skill most don’t learn in their higher education experience. According to the Wall Street Journal, U. S. colleges are failing to improve critical thinking skills at all. That includes skills like assessing evidence and interpreting data, both of which are essential for students to say anything useful in a peer critique.

What’s the #1 mistake we’re making with peer review? We’re not teaching students to do it effectively. As a result, peer feedback is falling flat.

But it doesn’t have to! There’s so much potential for peer review to be a learning experience for both the giver and receiver. When done correctly it gives both students a chance to reflect on their work and practice giving and receiving feedback. That’s the goal of any peer review exercise — and there is a way professors can make that happen every time.

Effective peer critique is an exercise that should benefit both students involved and inspire self-reflection.

HubSpot recently shared eight key ways students can make their peer feedback effective. If you’re an instructor who’s ready to turn YOUR students into masters of critique, then you’ll love our latest feature article How Peer Feedback Can Make a World of Difference in Your Classroom.

It is possible for your peer reviews to reach their full potential. All it takes is some small changes and a bit of expert coaching to show your students the ropes.
