Many teacher education programs use video — especially to record student teacher observations. But many programs fall short of harnessing all of video’s potential. Specifically, video platforms that provide time-stamped feedback go beyond the traditional benefits of student teaching video.

East Carolina University’s College of Education discovered when they used GoReact’s video feedback platform to record student teaching observation videos, it enhanced faculty feedback and deepened student self-reflection.

Better Feedback

When ECU adopted GoReact, Dr. Christina Tschida and other faculty in the College of Education believed that GoReact’s unique time-coded feedback feature would improve feedback for student teaching videos. And they were right. Their study found that 88% of the student teachers find the feedback in the teaching video useful.

Improved Student Reflections

Similarly, Dr. Taschida witnesses a remarkable improvement in student reflections as they used GoReact. Before GoReact, Dr. Tschida instructed her students to watch student teaching videos and record their reflections in a Word document. These limited tools produced reflections that were superficial because they mostly relied on memory instead of time-coded evidence.

Dr. Tschida said, “GoReact has created a space for our students to really learn how to reflect in strong ways — more sophisticated ways.” And they have the numbers to prove it. In a recent study, students were asked to do their reflection assignment using GoReact, and 78% of students rated the assignment as extremely or very important to developing their skills as a teacher.
