Getting Paid to Write

Can you still make money as a writer now-a-days?

I don’t really know the answer, but I keep looking, doing research, pitching and of course writing — even if no magazine or online content blog is paying me for the privilege!

I make 11 dollars a month on Medium, so there’s my full disclosure

But I like to write about what I like, so that comes at a cost when it comes to a marketplace like Medium and beyond.

You can just look at the stats to see what kind of writing Medium readers are paying attention too, but if I had to guess I would say number one is politics, right now, because this is an election year.

The main reason I write about getting paid to write is because I’ve noticed there is a “pay to play” dynamic in the gig economy now

You don’t have to pay to get a job at Target or Whole Foods, but if you want a steady income online from someone on Upwork, Freelance or FlexJobs you gotta buy tokens or credits, so you can bid on the job you’re applying for and this is just like bidding on an item on eBay!

I think this is terrible and the companies doing this should change their ways

But when something like writing is referred to as a “gig” what do you expect?
