Meet the Team at Gousto Tech — Dominic Pegg — Product Designer
This post is part of our series interviewing members of our GoustoTech team. In this post, we meet Dominic Pegg who is a Product Designer in our Rockets squad.
What is your favourite food?
For someone who loves food, this question isn’t easy. But you can never go wrong with Tori kara-age (Korean fried chicken) though… with a nice cold beer — mmm.
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role at Gousto.
So hey! I’m Dom. I currently work across two teams at Gousto which both have a laser focus on all things retention and activation. In my eyes, this means ensuring the customer has the most wonderful time possible while using Gousto, especially in the beginning of their time with us, ensuring we leave a lasting impression that encourages their loyalty and enables confident growth for our business. I also am heavily involved with the creation, development and maintenance of our design system and component libraries to enable developers and designers to be more consistent, which we’ve seen have a great impact on velocity and design excellence here at Gousto.
How long have you been at Gousto?
I started at Gousto just as soon as the pandemic hit. I was one of the first hires during the first lockdown, which was a strange concept to come to terms with at first. Turns out the teams were incredibly welcoming and I very quickly felt like one of the crew. Since then time has been absolutely flying by.
Can you tell us a little about your journey before arriving at Gousto?
I started my career as a visual designer at a service design agency called Fjord here in London. This gave me the opportunity to hone my skills in UI while picking up methodologies and frameworks from the smart people around me to help me progress within product design. After a few years in an agency setting, I moved to an in-house role as a full-time product designer to see what it was like on the other wise. I was working on creating their new digital and data-driven Editor, allowing the business to easily develop new products while leaving the customer to have a great time creating their gifts. Sometime after that, I landed myself a job here at Gousto supporting its enormous growth over the last couple of years.
What made you decide to join Gousto?
The decision was a no-brainer for me. I tend to know pretty quickly from an interview process if there’s good energy and smart people behind a business. Truth be told, I was super impressed with everyone I met along the way and their passion for the product (and for tasty food!). It was clear that the growth they were having was exponential, and behind the scenes they were pushing hard to make a positive environmental impact which is super important to me — now Gousto is officially a certified B Corporation™, (and a profitable one at that) which is amazing to be a part of.
What has been the most exciting thing you’ve worked on at Gousto since joining?
For me, I live for the betterment of people. I love working on features that really bring improvement into people’s lives and can help change them for the better. We did a long stint of user interviews which showed some underlying truths about Gousto — one core truth was that we only solve the dinners for a maximum of 4 days in a 7 day week. That’s 3 days where we’ve left the customer to fend for themselves — this can be tricky if you’re still new to cooking and struggle with choosing what to eat. So this led us to think, how can we help them without making them order another box? After a variety of ideation sessions with the team, we landed on the creation of a new and improved cookbook for the App, allowing users to browse through our repository of over 3000+ recipes… for free! Everyone loves our recipes, which are so carefully balanced by our amazing chefs, so why not give all our customers the ability to use any of our delicious recipes to solve the problem of what to eat for the rest of the week? No more foraging in the supermarket wondering what to piece together to create a meal. Time to reduce those takeaway nights, and more importantly, to stop making endless batches of spag bol.
What’s in the pipeline that you’re excited about at Gousto?
We’ve recently undergone an internal restructure of our teams, giving them more control over their given area of the product. This was an important shift for me, as it’s important as a business grows to keep challenging the focus and changing it up for the right reasons. Inherently, now each team has a focused customer mission, ensuring everything we do is for the best possible outcome for our beloved customers. I’m excited to see how teams adapt to the new changes!
How would you describe the culture at Gousto?
I personally love how passionate everyone is about the product. We all LOVE food here, and it shows. Everyone is constantly challenging each other to push for the best possible ideas and thinking 1, 3 and even 5 years into the future, making sure we stay ahead of the game and that we’re at the forefront of meaningful change. The culture here is very open and everyone is in a place to innovate and follow ideas through to production — which I love.
Why would you suggest that someone considers joining us at Gousto Tech?
If you want a challenge then this is the place for you. Gousto is a rocketship and is growing at a great pace, meaning there are new teams and opportunities popping up all the time. I’ve never worked with such a strong and engaged team of designers and developers who really want to do what is best for the customer.
