Meet the Team at Gousto Tech — Kira Slobodina — Software Engineer

This post is the tenth in our series interviewing members of our GoustoTech team. In this post we meet Kira Slobodina who is a Software Engineer in our Haricots squad.

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role at Gousto.

I’m Kira, and I joined Gousto as a Junior Software Engineer at the end of November 2019. It’s been an exciting and challenging journey so far, not only because Gousto is a great company to work for, but also because this is my very first role in Software Engineering… yes, another story of a complete career change (hopefully, eventually it will be a successful one :) )

Can you tell us a little about your journey before arriving at Gousto?

Well.. I wish I could say that I studied Computer Science & always knew what I wanted to do… but I didn’t. I initially took a social sciences route, worked in some customer-focused roles, moved from Russia to Italy, and only after moving to London decided to make this big career move. I always found Tech very exciting, but for some reason I mistakenly thought that it was too late to change my mind. So happy I was wrong!

I started with online tutorials and Udemy courses in the mornings/evenings before/after work, and then I found out about Codebar programming workshops… one of which was hosted by Gousto, and this leads nicely on to the next question!

“Oh that’s me in the center, with my future team lead Razvan, .. not fully realising the importance of the event yet”

What made you decide to join Gousto?

Now that I think about it — I met most of my current team at Codebar. And I remember thinking how great it would be to get a chance to work together and learn more from them. So, when I heard that Gousto was ready to hire someone without prior professional experience in Software Engineering, I applied right away.

What has been the most exciting thing you’ve worked on at Gousto since joining?

If I need to name just one thing, then it probably will be an update of our Food Waste Counter that we have on TV at the reception. Initially I thought I’d just need to change the images, fonts and make some minor styling changes according to the designs provided by our Brand team, but I ended up removing sooo many lines of unused CSS (it was an old project)! Now I really like checking the Counter every time I pass by the reception :)

What’s in the pipeline that you’re excited about at Gousto?

Everything, as I started a bit more than 6 months ago and have a lot to learn. But besides my own learning journey, I really like cooperation inside our cross-functional teams and early involvement of engineers in all the processes.

How would you describe the culture at Gousto?

Very friendly and motivating. Everyone sets high standards for themselves, for their team, for the code we write and all the work we do, supporting and challenging each other when needed. People here lead by example, care about quality and long-term solutions, take responsibility, show initiative and are always, always ready to help (and if they can’t, they will always help find someone who can).

Why would you suggest that someone considers joining us in GoustoTech?

There are plenty of challenges for everyone — the company is growing at a very fast pace and the plans are very ambitious! Things change quickly — it’s anything but boring.
