What is your favourite food?

Great question!

I love food in general and all cuisines. If I had to choose one, it would be Thai. But being an Italian, with a love for coffee and a huge sweet-tooth, the answer is pretty straightforward, it has to be homemade tiramisú!

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role at Gousto.

I’m Sara and I work at Gousto as Junior iOS Developer in the iOS Foundations team. We are a super team of 5 and our mission is to improve the team’s productivity by automating processes and building tools that can scale applications with high speed, quality and performance. Being part of the Foundations and working with the core of the iOS Gousto app is really exciting and challenging at the same time, especially now that the application has been used by over 1M people in the last year. And that is for a good reason: it provides the best way of having dinner with zero food waste, reduced use of plastic and a great range of choices.

How long have you been at Gousto?

Time flies!

I joined Gousto about 1.5 years ago and so much has changed since then!

I started working remotely as the pandemic hit the UK in April 2020. At first, I was a bit sceptical about the idea of facing a new role that wasn’t office based. However I soon realised this was a misconception of mine. My onboarding was smooth, and everyone was super keen to say hello (virtually), help and provide information.

Can you tell us a little about your journey before arriving at Gousto?

Change career is needed!

About 4 years ago I decided to move to London, looking for a new and exciting experience that could enrich my cultural background. Two years in, I decided I wanted to change my career and made the transition from Marketing to pursue a career in iOS development. I spent my time learning to code myself and took a uDemy course. This took about 3 intensive months while in the meantime I was building some sample apps to apply and test the knowledge acquired. I then found myself applying for roles and after a couple of weeks I joined an NGO that develops AR games for kids to teach them maths, and explore colours in a new and fun way. It was the first time in my new role and I was super excited.

A month later, a new adventure started!

What made you decide to join Gousto?

My next step!

I was reached out to by the Talent team and from then I fell in love with the company mission and culture.

My final interview step was office based and was pretty much unexpected! I didn’t feel any pressure even in the couple of square meters that were me and other 6 people who needed to hear my voice. Most of the people who were in that room are still working with me today in the iOS team. The output of that conversation was translated into such positive energy once it was done. So, mine was a yes, even if I hadn’t received a job offer yet!

What has been the most exciting thing you’ve worked on at Gousto since joining?

Thinking differently!

Working in Foundations is like jumping in a new role every 4 months.

The thing I’m most proud of is the Codebase health report we were able to produce as a team during the last year.

The report is a collection of metrics describing how the codebase of the iOS app is changing over time and its output is the result of previous improvements done on modularising the app and on the CI infrastructure. The report is already being used by teams to improve areas of the codebase that need extra attention such as framework test coverage, documentation, etc. This is also used by managers to prioritise engineering improvements on their roadmap.

Contributing on building this new tool has boosted my coding skills and helped to develop others:

  • perseverance, you can’t let impatience and frustration affect you
  • think different, let’s tackle a problem from different angle

What’s in the pipeline that you’re excited about at Gousto?

To the moon!

I’m excited to see how Gousto continues to further scale and evolve as it has done already in such a short time.

As a result, we have created new policies and an internal restructuring of teams to ensure we are maintaining clear objectives, a strong culture, and a motivated team.

Above all, we have strong initiatives in our customer care teams which I believe will greatly contribute to the success of Gousto.

How would you describe the culture at Gousto?

The main Gousto recipe!

We DREAM, DELIVER and CARE. These are our values and everyone is super excited about thinking big, with a focus on the impact and working collaboratively in a diverse and safe environment.

Why would you suggest that someone considers joining us at Gousto Tech?

Join the team!

My experience at Gousto has so far been a great journey. I’ve learned a lot and I can’t recognise myself if I think back to the person switching careers about 2 years ago.

Specifically, I would recommend Gousto as we promote ideas coming from different backgrounds which creates a development-first environment for juniors where mistakes are your springboard for your next challenge, giving the opportunity for learning and growth.
