Meet the Team at GoustoTech — Conrad Godfrey — Junior Software Engineer

This post is the eighth in our series interviewing members of our GoustoTech team. In this post we meet Conrad Godfrey who works as a Back-End Engineer for the Carrots Squad in our Core Tribe.

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role at Gousto.

I’m Conrad, and I’m a back end engineer from Oxfordshire. I work in the Carrots team who are in charge of a lot of behind the scenes processes that occur after you order your box — everything from working with payment providers to flexible courier management and optimising box packaging.

How long have you been at Gousto? How many boxes a week were we selling when you joined?

I’ve been at Gousto since January 2018 when we were selling 26,000 boxes a week.

Can you tell us a little about your journey until arriving at Gousto?

I studied Computing at Imperial College in London and while I was there lived round the corner from our current office, it’s fun to be back in Shepherd’s Bush! I then moved on to a small Biotechnology company based in Oxford and wrote laboratory management software in a full stack capacity, before realising that back end was what I really enjoyed — and that I wanted to work with a large Tech team in order to gain more knowledge.

What made you decide to join Gousto?

I’d used the product a few months before and could see that the company had an exciting future ahead of it! Speaking to our CTO Shaun on the phone in the final stage of my interview process really sold me on the fact that Gousto is doing cool tech — and that there was room on the (mostly PHP) team for a developer with a Python background.

Also, my uni friends Tom and Rodolphe had been working at Gousto for a couple of years each and both were really enjoying it, and I think that kind of vote of confidence is always helpful when deciding where to spend years of your life!

What has been the most exciting thing you’ve worked on at Gousto since joining?

I’ve really enjoyed working on things that map onto physical processes — one example is a piece of work we did called “Intelligent Packaging” — the end goal of which was to work out the optimal size of packaging to send to our customers based on the contents of the box. This means that if you’re ordering a mostly plant-based box with minimal dairy/meat then we can send you less insulation material. On the flip side, if the box you’re ordering has a lot of chilled goods in, we can upgrade the size of your packaging to prevent ingredients from being damaged.

I found it exciting as often the work we do can be quite invisible to the customer, but in this case the impact was clear! After we went live, my mum — a loyal Gousto customer who eats a lot of vegetarian food — called me up to congratulate me on the smaller packaging she’d been getting. Success!

What are you looking forward to most in 2019 at Gousto?

In 2019 I’m looking forward to a larger tech team, and exciting projects like customer recipe personalisation, and a revamped recipe development system.

How would you describe the culture at Gousto?

Friendly, supportive and diverse. Everyone at Gousto believes in the company and it’s mission. We’re also right in that sweet spot between being a startup and being a big, bloated organisation — so it’s a great environment to get things done that have a big impact.

Why would you suggest that someone considers joining us in GoustoTech?

You’ll have the chance to work with an awesome team on a really interesting stack. We have a cutting edge micro-service architecture set up, and the tech leadership team are really invested in solving problems the right way. Also if you’re a foodie like me there’s always something tasty cooking in the kitchen :)
