Meet the Team at GoustoTech — Tomasz Zubertowski — Senior Software Engineer
This post is the fourth in our series interviewing members of our GoustoTech team. In this post we meet Tomasz Zubertowski who is part our Web Tribe (Haricots squad) working as a Backend Software Engineer.
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role at Gousto.
I’ve been working in Haricots team, we mainly deals with customer retention. In addition to my product development team however I am also a member of the backend and architecture guilds which makes my position even more exciting 😤
How long have you been at Gousto? How many boxes a week were we selling when you joined?
I’ve been at Gousto since August 2017, I believe we’ve been selling around 16000 boxes a week back then.
Can you tell us a little about your journey until arriving at Gousto?
It all started with a fun, easygoing phone interview with someone who would later become my team mate (wink wink Hew). Phone interview was shortly followed up by a coding task that turned out to be a nice challenge, taken straight from the challenges Gousto’s engineering team has to face quite often, something you don’t see too often in the interview tests. The last part of the interview is where I actually got to know the team but also where I got to shine with both my technical expertise and fantastic soft skills 😂
That’s where the journey would usually end as I got the offer on terms that worked out for me but changing your job and leaving your team especially — those are decisions which should be though through, or so I believe. Which is why I asked our CTO, Shaun, to come visit the office, meet the people and work with them for a day. It so happened Friday worked out for me and that’s when our Tech Ten Percent day is being held so I got to experience all of the fun side projects people were working on. That single day dismissed all of my doubts , shortly after I joined the team.
What made you decide to join Gousto?
A lot of engineers tend to join companies based on their technical stack but it was actually the first-hand feedback I got from the team about their day to day work in Gousto and the enthusiasm I saw in them that made me join.
What has been the most exciting thing you’ve worked on at Gousto since joining?
Actually it was a pretty common project — an importer. This one however had quite strict acceptance criteria — it had to process a ton of data via queue messages in a feasible amount of time, meaning as fast as possible. I’ve had a ton of fun optimising my own code and I learned a lot about PHP internals too. The results I’ve got are also surprising, especially considering the PHP version limitations I had. Hopefully I’ll find a bit of time to write about it on our blog too.
What are you looking forwards to most in 2018 at Gousto?
Reaching our company retention goal for new customers. It’ll require a lot of work to improve our platform and I can’t wait to get my hands dirty reaching that goal 😎
How would you describe the culture at Gousto?
Gousto’s culture let’s you dream — never stopping you from innovating and improving but we also believe seeing results of our hard work is important. At the same time you we work as a team, there’s no “them” — there’s just “us”.
Why would you suggest that someone considers joining us in GoustoTech?
We are looking to grow a team that plays well together. Give us a go, perhaps we are a team you were looking for all along 😎
