Contagious Mental Viruses Are Harmful Lies
As human bodies can be infected with harmful physical viruses, human minds can be infected with harmful mental viruses.
Mental Viruses Are Lies That Erase The Line Between Right & Wrong
A toxic, infectious mental virus is a lie that tells people that what they used to think was wrong is actually right, and that now they can freely do what they previously thought was wrong and still consider themselves to be good people.
A toxic ethical virus tells them, “Go ahead. It’s OK to do that thing you want to do because it’s really not wrong after all.”
Mental Viruses Are Powered By Human Desires
As a physical virus lives in human organs. A mental virus acts through human hungers — the desires for money, sex, revenge, and power.
You want to have sex with a woman against her will, but you know it is wrong. Then the Nazis tell you, “If she’s a Jew then she’s not really human so raping her is not wrong after all. Go right ahead. It’s OK.”
The 19th Century Southerners tell you, “If she’s your black slave, then she’s not really human, so raping her is not wrong after all. She’s just subhuman property. Go right ahead. It’s OK.”
You will need to lie in order to get the other guy to sign your contract, but you’ve been taught that lying is wrong. Now, the mental-virus tells you, “Because this is a transactional business deal, lying is not really wrong after all. Go right ahead. It’s OK.”
There are all kinds of moral-virus lies that tell people that what they want to do but didn’t because it was morally wrong can now be done because it isn’t wrong any more.
A Moral-Virus Pandemic
Sometimes these moral-virus lies rampage through a population like a mental pandemic.
Essentially all nineteenth-century Southerners believed the lie that black slaves were a subhuman breed and that therefore it was perfectly fine for decent and moral Christians to enslave, beat, rape and kill them as they liked.
“All men were created equal”?
“Nope,” the moral-virus lie said, “That doesn’t apply to black people. Have at it.”
The Nazis’ “Jews are subhuman” moral-virus lie quickly convinced the overwhelming majority of the German people that it was not morally wrong to steal a Jew’s property, enslave them, beat them, rape them and kill them.
That particular moral-virus lie spread through the German people like wildfire, erasing the line between right and wrong everywhere it touched.
What happened in the 19th century American South and in 20th Century Germany shows us how entire societies can be infected with an ethical pathogen that changes the populations’ general understanding of where the line is between right and wrong.
A Society Is Doomed When It Erases The Line Between Right & Wrong
When a society’s generally accepted idea of what is right and what is wrong becomes corrupted, warped, or eliminated, that society becomes sick, and, perhaps like the 19th Century American South and mid-20th Century Germany, it dies.
Americans’ Toxic Mental-Virus Lie
Today, a majority of the American people have become infected with the mental-virus lie that tells them that it is morally acceptable to hire bad people to act on their behalf, that the character of their employees does not matter, and that they are not morally responsible for the harmful acts those bad people commit in their name.
This toxic moral-virus lie infects
- the apartment-house owner who claims s/he is a decent person even though s/he has hired a street gang to collect the rent, protesting that s/he has no moral responsibility for whatever harm the gang does in their service;
- the elementary school principal who hires a convicted child predator to be the school’s head janitor because he will work cheap, claiming that s/he has no moral responsibility for any children the janitor molests;
- the board of directors that hires a man who was convicted of swindling thousands of seniors out of their life savings as their company’s CFO because he will make them more money, claiming that they have no moral responsibility for any of the frauds he perpetrates in their company’s pursuit of higher profits;
- the CEO of an investment bank who hires a man convicted of sexually assaulting several woman as a senior Vice President because he is a great money maker, arguing that the CEO has no responsibility for any of the women the new VP harasses, blackmails, or assaults through the exercise of the power that the CEO has given him;
- the citizen who votes for a known scoundrel, liar, and convicted criminal for mayor, senator or president, claiming that he has no responsibility for the harm the candidate he helps elect does with the power that his office gives him.
The apartment house owner says, “I am a decent, moral person and I did nothing wrong by hiring a street gang as my rent collector. The gang is just doing a job for me. Their character is irrelevant, and their conduct is not my responsibility.”
The elementary school principal says, “I am a decent, moral person who did nothing wrong by hiring a convicted pedophile as my head janitor. The pedophile is just doing a job for me. His bad character and whatever children he molests are not my responsibility.”
The board of directors says, “We are decent, moral people who did nothing wrong by hiring a convicted scam artist as our CFO. The fraudster is just doing a job for us. His bad character doesn’t matter, and whatever scams he perpetrates are not our responsibility.”
The voter says, “I am a decent, moral person who did nothing wrong by voting for a scoundrel as our President. The politician is just doing a job that I want done. His bad character doesn’t matter, and whatever wrongs he commits with the power I gave him is not my responsibility.”
The Lies This Moral Virus Tells
This moral virus that tells people that the character of those they hire, the people who they choose to act in their name, doesn’t matter, has ravaged the ethics of the American people.
This moral virus that tells voters that they are not responsible for the harm that the bad person they elect does with the power they gave him has infected the American people.
In a sane and decent society people understand that it is wrong to empower scoundrels and criminals in the hope that hiring them will benefit you.
Our Problem Isn’t Donald Trump
→Our problem is the corrupt moral code of the Americans who chose to empower a person of Trump’s character to act in their name because they think electing him will benefit them.
→Our problem is that the people who voted for Donald Trump are infected with the moral-virus lie that the character of those they elect does not matter.
→Our problem is that the people who voted for Donald Trump are infected with a moral-virus lie that it’s not wrong to empower bad people in order to get something you want, and the lie that they are not responsible for the wrongs that the bad people they empower commit in their names.
→Our problem is that this moral-virus lie tells people that it’s OK to make a deal with the devil.
→Our problem is that this moral-virus lie has fooled those infected with it into thinking that they can make a deal with the Devil and walk away
- (1) undamaged and
- (2) with clean hands.
Of course, like the American slave owners and the Hitler-loving Germans before them, they cannot do either.
