This Column Is For Those Who Know How Bad Trump Is & Still Plan To Vote For Him
Who we chose to lead us tells the world who we are

I recently published this column.
The key point of that article was not to argue that “Trump is bad” and not to ask “Why don’t you know that Trump is bad?”
No, it was designed to explain to others why people who think that Trump is a terrible person will nevertheless still vote for him.
The Purpose Of This Column Is NOT To Argue That Trump Is Bad
This column is also not intended to convince anyone that Trump is bad. If you think Donald Trump is a decent, honest, truthful, trustworthy person, then there is nothing new that I could say that would convince you otherwise.
You can stop reading right now. Thank you.
This Column Is For Those Who Know That Trump Is Bad & Still Plan To Vote For Him
This column is directed to those who do know that Donald Trump is a lying, dishonest, untrustworthy, person with little to no integrity, but who still intend to help him become the next President of the United States.
As a preface, I will tell you that if today the Presidential election were between Mitt Romney or John McCain as the Republican candidate and Donald Trump as the Democratic candidate, I would unhesitatingly vote for Romney or McCain. I would trudge through fire and ice to vote for either of them in that contest.
The Leaders We Choose Reveal OUR Character & OUR Values
The people we choose to associate with, the people we choose to lead us tell the world who we are.
They are us and we are them.
The person we chose as our President reflects our national character, our shared morals, our nation’s values, and what things are most important to us as Americans.
Trump’s Character & Morals
Donald Trump has been convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in a department-store dressing room, has bragged about being able to get away with grabbing strange women’s genitals, has six times run his companies into bankruptcy, has been indicted on felony charges in four different jurisdictions by both state and federal grand juries, is a supporter of Valdimir Putin, a critic of NATO, a pathological liar, and a convicted felon.
Is He You?
I used to think that such a person could never be chosen to represent the character and the values of the American people. Now, I’m not so sure.
To those who know how bad Trump is and are still going to do whatever they can to make him our next President, I ask you directly:
- Is he who you are?
- Does he represent your character and your values?
- Do you think Donald Trump reflects the character and the values of the American people?
- Do you want the American people to tell the rest of the world that Donald Trump represents their character and their values?
- Is he you?
- Is he us?
Have we sunk that low?
I used to think that was a rhetorical question. I no longer do.
If Donald Trump represents the values and the character of the American people then I am ashamed of how bad a people we Americans have become.
Helping Bad People Never Produces Good Results
Anyone who thinks that helping a despicable person gain power will turn out well for our country is tragically wrong.
Good people who think that America will benefit from empowering a scoundrel are doomed to failure and despair, and they will deserve to reap the toxic crop that they have choosen to sow.
Sadly, the rest of us who will be dragged down with them do not. Here is why:
On February 11, 1861 Abraham Lincoln paused at the railroad depot in Springfield, Illinois before boarding his train to Washington D.C. where he would assume the office of President of the United States.
He told a small group of friends who had gathered to see him off:
“I now leave, not knowing when, or whether ever, I may return, with a task before me greater than that which rested upon Washington. Without the assistance of the Divine Being who ever attended him, I cannot succeed. With that assistance I cannot fail. Trusting in Him who can go with me, and remain with you and be everywhere for good, let us confidently hope that all will yet be well. To His care commending you, as I hope in your prayers you will commend me, I bid you an affectionate farewell.”
Lincoln never returned, alive, to his beloved Springfield.
The thought of Donald Trump as the choice of the party of Abraham Lincoln walking the halls where Abraham Lincoln saved the Union absolutely breaks my heart.
