You’ve heard it all before: a seven-night adventure in the Eastern Caribbean with stops for shopping in San Juan, St. Thomas, and St. Marteen. Nearly every major cruise line has some combination of these stops in their Caribbean itineraries, and thousands of vacationers set sail for these ports each year.

Even if you’ve never embarked on a Caribbean cruise before, you might find yourself wondering about distinctly different opportunities for cruise vacations — perhaps a view of mighty glaciers, or a historic and temperate river cruise as an alternative to tropical island-hopping.
