What does Woman-Owned Business Set Aside Spending look like during COVID-19?

It is no secret that the last year has been difficult. Juggling covid, kids, and careers has left even the most “together” individuals frazzled. Articles abound with news of how women have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. With this in mind, I wanted to see how this affected Woman Owned Businesses’ performance in the GovCon space and what that impact looked like.

Using GovTribe Reports, I compared the number of prime, federal contract awards that were designated as set aside for Woman Owned Small Business (WOSB), Woman Owned Small Business Sole Source, and Economically Disadvantaged Woman Owned businesses (EDWOSB) over the course of the last 5 years. You can learn more about what qualifies these organizations to receive such a Set Aside on SBA’s WOSB Program.

In Spite of COVID-19 and all of the chaos that categorized 2020, Woman Owned Set Aside Awards and Spending rose by 20.6% and 14% respectively in 2020.

How did the number of Prime Federal Contract Awards that were designated as WOSB or EDWOSB businesses change?

2017: 2.4k Awards

2018: 1.3k Awards

2019: 2.9k Awards

2020: 3.5k Awards

This report shows the total number of prime federal contract awards made each year that were designated as set aside for Woman Owned Small Businesses and Economically Disadvantaged Woman Owned Small Businesses. Surprisingly, Women Owned businesses were awarded 3.5k awards in 2020. The highest number of awards since the Women Owned Set aside was created. This was also a 20.6% jump from the number of awards granted in 2019.

How has the Government funding for WOSB and EDWOSB designated awards changed?

2016 : 477.8 million

2017: 708.6 million

2018: 665.4 million

2019: 770.4 million

2020: 879.8 million

This reports show that the performance for the Awards set aside for Women Owned Businesses during the Pandemic continued to grow. In other words, women continued to receive funding and complete the work they had won during 2020. To be exact, they received 14% more funding for the work they completed in 2020 than what they completed in 2019.
