A Long Wait On Log Cabin Drive

The idea that Log Cabin Drive in Macon isn’t up to the transportation needs of locals has been floating around for at least the last 20 years.

Back in the 1990s, the plan was to widen the road to 14 foot lanes with a turn lane in the middle and sidewalks on both sides. This was the era of massive Georgia Department of Transportation projects and Log Cabin was folded into a large and controversial one called the Northwest Parkway.

Money for the Northwest Parkway dried up amidst a lack of public support. Meanwhile, Log Cabin still needed sidewalks. It might happen now in 2015.

The question I want to ask in my piece of What Moves You, Georgia is this: why do the Log Cabins of the world, so obviously in need of basic safety improvements, go so long untouched?

Listen here to Jessie Green, 69 years old and a 40 year resident of Log Cabin Drive, as she wonders if she will see sidewalks in her lifetime.
