A Community No Longer

A Reflection

The national election is over
But the struggle at the local level persists
The anger is so pervasive
That you can almost touch it
It pollutes the very air we breathe
Suffocating in its heaviness
Threatening to overwhelm all reason
Even I am shaken from my usual optimism
That eventually fairness and understanding
Will prevail
No Disney happy ending is in sight

How did my community come to this?
Are we simply a microcosm of the division
And upheaval in the country as a whole?

At times it seems
That we no longer have individuals and families in our town
With their own identities and dreams
Some deride “woke liberals”
Trying to uproot their traditional values
And impose their political correctness and socialist views
On the rest of us
And others rant about “right wing reactionaries”
To their thinking, ignorant fools intent on
Returning our community to an idyll
That only ever existed in their imagination
