Can You Listen?
An open plea to my extended family
Relax;
I’m not asking for anything,
so you can move your hand
away from your wallet;
stop clenching so hard.
Try this, open your hand
and place it on your heart.
I know we don’t have much time;
stop sneaking a peek at the stocks
or your favorite Instagram app
and look at me.
No, I mean, really look;
notice my puffy eyes
and worry lines on my brow.
It takes courage to listen
but we have a problem;
a major problem.
And I’m pleading.
Do you hear me?
Listen with your heart
instead of waiting for me to shut up
so you can bully me with words
about why you’re right
and I’m so wrong.
It’s scary to listen, I know,
’cause then you feel vulnerable,
out of control.
