“Ebola poll: Two-thirds of Americans worried about possible widespread epidemic in U.S.”

“More than 4 in 10 respondents say they are “very” or “somewhat worried” about the possibility that they or immediate family members might catch the virus, even though it can be transmitted only through contact with bodily fluids and only after the onset of symptoms.”

this is unsurprising and exactly what I expected to happen and it’s not good for anyone. It doesn’t say anything good about the United States or our culture. This is why people should read dystopic novels, so that they know what happens when everyone buys into a panic. Or, like, history — actually, it seems like it might be a good idea to start teaching kids about major historical disasters and the successful and unsuccessful responses to them.

This blog post from a marketing guy puts it well and very succinctly — http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2014/10/the-self-marketing-of-ebola.html
