4 ways to connect with your grandkids in college

College has always been a transitional time for families; for parents, siblings, students and grandparents alike. As of 2016, about 20.5 million students were expected to attend college in the US which means that a lot of families were saying goodbye to their babies, to the kids whose diapers they changed and who’ve somehow managed to grow up right before their very eyes.

It’s a time of change when parents are learning to let go and children are learning how to become adults. So in the midst of all this, where do grandparents fit into the picture? They’re still as important as ever but the time spent between grandkids and grandparents tends to become increasingly rare as grandchildren get busier and increasingly independent.

How should grandparents combat the distance then? We’ve listed a few ideas of how to connect with your grandkids and how to remain close even if you’re far apart.

  1. Send a care package: these can make a student’s week, especially when those meal cards are running low on points! If you’re feeling extra generous, provide some supplies to keep them stress-free, healthy and happy while at school.
  2. Go to homecoming and other family friendly events at their schools: even if they’re noisy and not where you’d usually go, making the trip shows your grandkids that you want to spend time with them.
  3. Write them a letter or give them a call: instead of waiting for them to reach out, why not take the first step? College can get lonely and you never know the impact a simple five or ten minute conversation will have on your grandchild. A familiar, friendly voice goes a long way, especially when you’re far from home.
  4. Let them know that you’d like to spend time with them when they’re home: Even if it’s just a quick visit, you’re letting them know you want to invest in them and value time with them. Let your grandkids know that you’ve got an open ear whenever they need one.

College is a huge transition time for the entire family but making yourself actively available and reaching out means that you’re not just waiting for them to contact you– you’re letting your grandchild know from the start that you care; you always have and you always will.
