My work life has always been a patchwork of opportunities. It works for me. Currently, I’m a swim coach, an ESL teacher, and a writer. I’ve called myself a writer since I was 10, and it looks different on any given day.

In light of “The Case of the Missing Earnings” ( the latest Nancy Drew mystery you’ve never heard of), I wanted to share some possible ways you can earn income through your writing. I’ve done most of them, but not all.

  1. In 2023, there were 4,790 small-town weekly newspapers in the US. Here’s a list by state: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_weekly_newspapers_in_the_United_States. Stringers are paid by the article. I’ve written on topics from “How to get a stop sign in your neighborhood” to “Upcoming events at the local farmer’s market.”
  2. Small shops are always opening in towns and cities across the world. Offer to set up social media accounts on Twitter and Instagram, manage them, and write posts for them. It is helpful if you have a large following.
  3. Print magazines still thrive. I wrote an entire essay on how to get your foot in the door:

Hi, I’m Grace. A non-participant observer who finds the less I talk the more I see. The more I observe, stories stick to me like magnets. I just need to write them down. Two feet on the floor, one foot in front of the other. Thanks for reading. Grace🎶

I take leaps of faith to find that writing about real life and the stories we live, has a ripple effect in the world around us.
