This is not my European Union anymore

Today is the darkest day in the history of the European Union. Never before a member was so utterly humiliated and shamelessly blackmailed from its partners in the pretence of acting in its own interest.

What happened is intolerable and changes fundamentally the premises of the European Project as I was used (deluded?) to see it, revealing it for what it is. A currency union restive to democratic manifestations and devoid of any political shared vision other than the expectation of economic and financial mechanisms progressively constraining, cancelling and eventually homogenising the decisions, aspirations and freedom of member states under the aegis of an utilitarian economic project.

And even if this plan aimed to attain some long-term superior good (which is arguable) and all of us fully and democratically agreed on this actuation (which is not the case), such a project should necessarily still contain the immortal values and ideas which forged our common European identity. Philosophy and Science (Economics somewhere between the two) would advise us to act according to principles of caution, solidarity and fairness. Politics would have us compromising and bargaining with a democratic spirit. History would teach us to use respect and foresight when deciding upon the destiny of other member states.

Today this spirit alongside these ideas and dreams are crushed and ridiculed. European policy makers failed me. Whichever the reasons and the interests they believed to defend, they scarred my soul and all those of who still believed in Europe as a force for good in this world.

This is not my European Union anymore.

Oggi è il giorno più oscuro nella storia dell’Unione Europea. Mai prima d’ora un paese membro fu a tal punto umiliato e vergognosamente riccattato dai suoi partner nella pretesa di agire nel suo stesso interesse.

Quel che è accaduto è intollerabile e cambia fondamentalmente le premesse del Progetto Europeo così come ero abituato (illuso?) a vederlo, rivelandolo per quello che è. Un’unione monetaria insofferente ad espressioni democratiche e priva di una condivisa visione politica se non l’aspettativa che meccanismi economici e finanziari progressivamente limitino, cancellino e, finalmente, omogenizzino decisioni, aspirazioni e libertà degli stati membri sotto l’egida di un utilitaristico progetto economico.

Ed anche se questo progetto potesse ottenere un qualche bene superiore nel lungo periodo (il che è discutibile), e tutti noi pienamente e democraticamente concordassimo la sua attuazione (cosa che non sembra stia accadendo), questo progetto Europeo dovrebbe necessariamente contenere quegli immortali valori ed idee che forgiarono la nostra identità Europea. La Filosofia e la Scienza (l’economia non è che una fra le scienze) ci consiglia di agire secondo principi di cautela, solidarietà e giustizia. La Politica vuole facciamo uso di compromessi e negoziazioni in spirito democratico. La Storia ci insegna ad adoperare rispetto e lungimiranza nel decidere il destino di altri paesi membri.

Oggi questo spirito, queste idee e questi sogni sono ridicolizzati e spazzati via. I politici Europei mi hanno profondamente deluso. Quale che fossero le ragioni e gli interessi che credevano di difendere, hanno segnato la mia anima e quelle di chi ancora credeva nell’Europa come una forza per il bene in questo mondo.

Questa non è più la mia Unione Europea.
