What’s the problem?

The United States, according to an Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report, had more than twice the reported OECD average per capital healthcare spending than other developed countries in 2014.

The goal of the Affordable Care Act was to reduce the amount of individuals without health insurance in the U.S., while also making it affordable and accessible. It also required health insurance companies to accept people with pre-existing conditions while not charging them more than a person without any medical issues.

The act also expanded Medicaid to cover more people who were stuck because they were not qualified for Medicaid coverage, nor could they afford health insurance.

Most Republicans want to repeal the act, saying that the plan is unaffordable for some people as insurance premiums continue to rise.

Most Democrats wish to reform the act to ensure as many individuals insured as possible.

A common ground between the two parties, however, is to keep the provisions of the act that protect people with pre-existing conditions and prevent health insurance companies from over charging people with medical problems.
