In this blog, I will briefly introduce nouns and how they can be used in sentences. Let’s get started!

What are nouns?

A noun is an important element of the eight basic parts of speech.

Nouns denote:

  • People
  • Places
  • Things
  • Ideas

Proper Nouns vs. Common Nouns

Nouns can be categorized into two classes based on the genericness of the noun:

  • Proper nouns
  • Common nouns

  • Concrete nouns
  • Abstract nouns
  • Collective nouns

Singular vs. Plural vs. Countable vs. Uncountable

Nouns can be classified into groups based on the number of entities that they represent and the ability to count those entities:

  • Singular
  • Plural
  • Countable
  • Uncountable

Nouns in a sentence

There is a classification of nouns based on the way each noun is used in a sentence:

  • Subject
  • Object: direct and indirect
  • Subject complement
  • Object complement

Appositive vs. Modifiers/Adjectives vs. Possessive
