I would have my students read through this article, and then work in small groups and discuss their thoughts on the article. Why would teachers want to go on strike? What are the main causes of the strike? How big of a deal is a strike of this size? I would give my class about 10 minutes and then each group would present and give some of their ideas. I would fill out a graphic organizer as they presented to write down some common ideas and themes that arise in each groups presentation.

Some misconceptions that students may have about this article are that teachers are striking because they don’t want to be teachers anymore, or that they don’t like their students. This is the complete wrong idea, as these teachers are striking because they don’t like their working conditions or the pay they are receiving.

SOCIAL STUDIES CONTENT STANDARD 1 (1) To satisfy the requirements of social studies content standard 1, a student must access, synthesize, and evaluate information to communicate and apply social studies knowledge to real world situations.

This standard would fit well with this article, because my students would be using some knowledge about social studies in a real world situation like the teacher strike that occurred in LA.
