Carolina residents prepare to evacuate as rivers rise

Summary:

Hurricane Florence came across the Carolinas and evacuated many people. The South Carolina coast flood zones rose up to ten feet which is a record event. Along the Waccamaw, the water peaked at 22 feet. This flood has taken 43 lives so far.

Lesson:

In a seventh grade classroom, the students will work in small groups to construct data on Hurricane Florence. This will take some researching but the students will compare Hurricane Florence with another Hurricane of their choice and they will compare the height of the different hurricanes, the damage of the hurricanes, the lives taken, etc. The students will be allowed to decide what they are comparing about the two different hurricanes but they must make 7 comparisons. Once they have finished with their comparisons, they will do Posting Boards. The students will create a Padlet with all of their comparisons shown. Once completed, the students will present what they came up with to the classroom. In the end, we will wrap it up with a whole classroom conversation about natural hazards and what they learned about hurricanes.

Strategy:

Posting Boards:I think that this is a different way for the students to present what they have learned in their research and to give their classmates a visual representation of what they are talking about.

Misconceptions:

What a hurricane is.

How often they happen.

Where they can happen.

Why they happen.

What the teacher will learn:

Living in Montana teachers probably don’t know too much about hurricanes so this is a good time to learn from your students all about them. As a teacher, you may find more interest in the topic and decide you want to expand it.

Other ways this was taught:

I didn’t find other ways this article was taught but I found that other teachers teach a science lab on creating a model of hurricanes and I think that this would be interesting to step into after learning about what they are.

Standard:

6th-8th

analyze and interpret data on natural hazards to forecast future catastrophic events and inform the development of technologies to mitigate their effects .
