Topic: Adjectives and descriptive terms

Lesson standards:

RW.7.3. d: Use precise words and phrases, relevant, descriptive details, and sensory language to capture action and convey experiences and events.

SL.5.4: Report a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace and include sources.

Connection: Students will develop and understanding of how to implement the use of adjectives to help provide imagery to their audience.

Lesson Objectives:

After completing an analysis of the use of adjectives and descriptive terms students will demonstrate their understanding by creating a video performance of their descriptive paragraphs assessed by a rubric.

Time: 55 minutes

Differentiation:

· Whole group

This is the general plan of instruction.

· Pre-instructional subgroup

Not all students may be on the same understanding; however, the use of the pre-assessment will provide insight into the students’ prior knowledge.

· Instructional subgroup

This is the focus of the lesson.

· Proficient subgroup

None necessary

Accommodations or Modifications:

Students who experience difficulties with writing may need assistance completing; however, by utilizing the video and oral communication will provide these students with an alternative strength during the assignment.

Pre-Assessment:

Students will be asked “What is an adjective?”, this will be a short class discussion. To help inspire students I will have 3 sentences prepared that use adjectives. Sentences can very for the specific age range of the students.

1. The suit matches her NEW robe.

2. She dove into the CHILLY pool.

3. Angela wins a BLUE ribbon for FIRST place.

Materials:

- Writing paper

- Writing utensils (pen/pencil)

- Print out of the reading excerpt from “A Long Walk to Water” By Linda Sue Park

Teacher Resources:

- “A Long Walk to Water” By Linda Sue Park

Instructional Sequence:

1. Students will be asked “What is an adjective?”, this will be a short class discussion. To help inspire students I will have 3 sentences prepared that use adjectives. Sentences can vary for the specific age range of the students.

a. The suit matches her NEW robe.

b. She dove into the CHILLY pool.

c. Angela wins a BLUE ribbon for FIRST place.

2. After a short discussion the students will also be provided an example from the book “A Long Walk to Water” By Linda Sue Park. Students will be provided a copy of the text to follow a long with. If there are not enough copies of the novel for each of the students, then excerpts can be distributed for the students.

3. As a class the excerpt will be broken down and each of the parts identified. As a focus, we will be working on adjectives and descriptive terms. Some questions to focus the students’ thoughts are:

- What does the words make you think of or see?

- Can you feel the mud in your toes from the author’s description?

4. The students understanding will come from collaborative communication and the discovery of what an adjective is. Some students may already have knowledge of adjectives and may need challenged more.

* Invite the more advanced students to re-create the excerpt using synonyms for the adjectives.

5. Completing the lesson students will write 1–2 paragraphs of a story, fiction or non-fiction, using descriptive detail.

6. As their homework assignment students will be asked to prepare a video performance of their paragraphs and post to the google classroom, also providing a text guide of their performance.

7. After the students have posted their video and followed the attached instructions, they will be able to access their own self-assessment. Students are being asked to analysis their own use and understanding of an adjective. How does an adjective make a reading interesting or boring?
