There was an article recently published by the Bozeman Daily Chronicle about the fact that Montana Fish Wild Life and Parks wants to close a section on hunting land in the northern part of Yellowstone to make the land safer for the hunters in that area. The article is about a high traffic bison hunting land in the northern part of Yellowstone that has started to become unsafe for the hunters that are hunting on the land in that area, because of how many people are in that area trying to hunt all at one time they said there could be up to 30 or more people hunting in that area all at one time. Fish Wild Life and Parks is working with Native American tribes in that area to help come up with a way to make the land safer but also not going against treat rights that the Native American tribes have to hunt in that area.

I expect students to have questions about the different Native American tribes in the area. I also expect students to have questions about hunting in Montana because not all students are hunters. To assist the students with questions about the article they may have is to have students research something that they have a question on in the article.

The strategy that I would use with this activity is flash boards. I would use this formative assessment because I could ask the children a question about the article like why would it be unsafe to have so many people in the area? A question that I could also ask the students is why is it important to work with Native Americans when discussing closure of the land. The children could ask you questions that they might have about the article or about different subjects in the articles that they didn't get to research earlier. I can also see the student’s reflections and their thoughts on the article.

What I would learn from this activity is if I need to go more in depth with the different Native American tribes in Montana or even in that area of Yellowstone. Which is extremely important especially teaching in Montana because we have so many different Native American tribes in the state. I would also learn what students dont know about native Montana animals.

Other teachers could use this article or an article like it to introduce a unit or lesson about Native Americans. Other teachers could also use this article to introduce a lesson or a unit about Montana based animals.

The grand challenge for this article is the American experience.

The standard for this lesson is: SL.2.2 Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.
