Machine Learning

In the article I decided to read it talks about machine learning in mathematics but specifically probabilistic topic models. It talks about the uses of machine learning in general internet searching. It gives specific to a topic model which would pick out particular words that pertain to a certain subject in an article. This would allow the reader or researcher of the article better understand what different aspects are in the article. The significance of this article is show people the uses of a probabilistic topic model and how to make predictions off of the model.

Some questions that could be asked by the student would be:

what is the use of machine learning?

what is the benefit of a probabilistic topic model?

How is a probabilistic topic model used?

The grand challenges it connects to unlocking the mysteries of the universe. It connects to this one because in machine learning it is an unknown world where there is endless possibilities. In this article it is exploring a model that would make forming a perdiction on large data sets and articles easier more accessible.

The content area standard that this article would pertain to

Montana Mathematics Content Standard Standards for Mathematical Practice: Grades 9–12 Explanations and Examples: HS.MP.4. Model with mathematics : High school students can apply the mathematics they know to solve problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace. mathematics. By high school, a student might use geometry to solve a design problem or use a function to describe how one quantity of interest depends on another. High school students making assumptions and approximations to simplify a complicated situation, realizing that these may need revision later. They are able to identify important quantities in a practical situation and map their relationships using such tools as diagrams, two-way tables, graphs, flowcharts and formulas. They can analyze those relationships mathematically to draw conclusions. They routinely interpret their mathematical results in the context of the situation and reflect on whether the results make sense, possibly improving the model if it has not served its purpose.

Students are expected The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe ways in which students ought to engage with the subject matter as they grow in to: mathematical maturity and expertise.

I would use the KWL chart where I would have the students first write down what they know about machine learning before reading the article. Then have them write what they want to know, and then afterwards have them write what they have learned about machine learning. This activity would be diverse in that it would be presented in a variety of ways, either read the article quietly, listen to it read on the computer, or listen to it read out loud. This would give students options to choose from for what is easier for them to learn. This applies to what I wanted to focus on cause this would give the teacher a good idea of who is interested in machine learning and who has a prior background in machine learning.
