The article I chose discusses the importance of our diets as it pertains to microbes. This is particularly important as diet and nutrition is imperative to health and the increase we are experiencing in fad diets. This article illustrates the importance of microbes and how to keep them healthy.

An article like this should make students evaluate their own diets and perhaps even ask themselves: Am I getting enough fiber? If not, how could I obtain enough fiber in my diet? Is there such thing as too much fiber? It is important for students to recognize the importance of microbes in our bodies and how to maintain healthy function.

The grand challenge this article mostly addresses is understanding and sustaining a biodiverse planet. It addresses this challenge in a very interesting way that the article is really helping us understand how to sustain the biodiversity within ourselves.

This specifically addresses 9th-12th grade Health Enhancement Content Standard 9. Analyze human body systems, their function and their interrelationship with one another; upon reading this article students will have a better understanding of the relationship between humans and microbes. Students will understand the two different types of microbes and why it is essential to maintain a healthy balance.

I think slow read would be a very helpful strategy when reading this article. Slow reading helps with the retention of new material and fosters deeper level thinking. When I read slowly, I find that I look at the topic much more in depth and take time think of more questions. Having students read this article aloud at home may spark some interesting ideas and questions that could be brought back into class for a concluding discussion on microbes and the importance of fiber in our diets.
