  • My article is titled: “Fort Belknap students learn traditional smudging, sweetgrass braiding during Native American week.” By: Chris Jorgensen. This article is about how the Native American reservation in Fort Belknap, Montana had a week dedicated to teaching the students about different traditions from the Assiniboine and Nakoda tribes.
  • Questions that my students could come up with from this article would be along the lines of, What is Native American sweetgrass braiding? What is smudging? Why are these sort of traditions important to them? What are other traditions that Native Americans follow? Where are the other reservations in Montana located? How many reservations do we have in Montana? And so many other questions.
  • There are so many different activities I could do with this article and lesson with my future student. Some of the activities I would use in this lesson would be, a word sort, and turn and talk. The reason I chose these activities for this lesson is because, they would be the best way to tie into the lesson. Students are going to be learning so many different words that the easiest way to sort them out and to learn them is by putting them into a word sort. Every time a unfamiliar words show up in an article that the class and I are reading, we will stop, have a discussion about what the students think what the word means, and then we will look up the word and put it up somewhere, where everyone can see it. A turn and and talk is another useful activity that I can use in this lesson because the students can talk to one another to see what their thoughts and have them share what they have discussed with one another. With the turn and talk, the class and I would read a paragraph at a time then I would let them talk to their elbow partner. Over the time they are discussing what we have just read, they can ask each other questions that they still need answered, and also talk to one another about unfamiliar words, and what they think they mean.
