NASAA’s NEEMO Project

NEEMO- “the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations project- is a NASA analog mission that sends groups of astronauts, engineers and scientists to live in Aquarius, the world’s only undersea research station, for up to three weeks at a time. Operated by Florida International University, Aquarius is located 3.5 miles off Key Largo in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It is deployed next to deep coral reefs 62 feet below the surface.”

How does this relate to the classroom and technology in the classroom?

It relates to both because NASA is developing a video game that takes place in this under aquarium that will allow students to look into each plant, animal, fish or living organisms within the researched area. NASA researchers are hoping to include nature lovers, experts and amateurs, to help them create a database of all these ecosystems by playing a fun video game. By playing this game it will allow you to fully experience what it is like under the water. These experiences are brought to the viewer or gamer in both 2D and 3D imagery.

Vocabulary

Identify unfamiliar and challenging words from the Vocab list at the end of the article and discuss meanings with the class.

Create spelling lists and tests around the Vocab words.

Ask students to seek out the synonyms and antonyms of the Vocab words.

Writing

Pictures Speak A Thousand Words — Ask students to pick their favorite picture and describe it in their own words.

Ask students to identify the main theme of the article and write a short summary.

Beyond the classroom and article

Pick any general knowledge article and ask students to conduct additional research and write a summary.

Possible Misconceptions students might have

. A possible misconception that the student might have is they could get caught up in playing the game and not pay attention to the actual concepts of the lessons.

What could you learn from students

. Using this type of assignment could lead to a lot of cool things that students find within the game that you may have overlooked or not even known about. Students are extremely bright in this category and definitely know more than you.
