Grand Challenge: Understanding the American Experience

Summary:
University of Montana are trying to find ways to not cut the arts budget. They are trying to find ways to keep the arts in schools. They are planning a meeting for October 10th to decide what they can do to keep money coming in to keep the Arts in the school.

Lesson:
I would teach this to a 5th grade classroom. The students would work with a group/partner to do some research on what the arts do for you and why they are important. They will look into what benefits the arts have and find some facts about the arts. Once complete they will teach about what they came up with to their peers. They will also connect arts to history, and cultures.

Standard:
5th Grade

  1. compare connections between music and historical and cultural context

Strategy:
At the end we will wrap it up with a chalk talk to hear what the students have to say about the arts budgets being cut. With doing the chalk talks the students will be allowed to share their opinions and their thoughts. Some students may bring up topics that others may not have thought about The goal for this is that students will walk away with new knowledge on why the arts are important.

Misconceptions:

  1. The students may not understand why the arts are important.
  2. The students that do not partake in arts may not think that this is important.
