To the refugees:
I am sorry
I am sorry your journey has seemed for not
That the stories of a dream, of people free and brave
have been unveiled to be myth.
I am sorry on behalf of a country that won’t say it.
I am sorry you are told to be grateful that is better here than there.
I am sorry there are those that demand gratitude as they erase your culture.
but an abuser does not deserve thanks because they could do worse and didn’t
To those that are quiet:
Be loud
In the way that you know how. Be loud
We outnumber those that would cast away, abandon, and leave for dead those who need help.
I believe we have more good people than bad
More honest than dishonest
More kind, compassionate, and empathetic than not.
We must be the face the world sees
We must provide evidence to those that want to believe there is good.
Remember your Ancestor, Refugees too.
Remember the refugees that came here first.
Remember.
Ignore those that would mock you
Claim you act out of naivety
Entice you to swap your rose tinted glasses for blacked outs.
Let them try and convince you to abandon hope and accept apathy.
Do not drink the fear they monger.
Remind them apathy is their privilege and not yours.
Forget your worry that your voice does not matter.
Remember that there are many that stand with you,
Together we can change the tide
But it must start with one.
Be that one.
This one is obvious so I won’t explain much. Be positive and be loud with it. If you are happy, then you have a moral obligation to help others be happy. Be obnoxious with it and snuff out the negative around you.
