We recently sat down with James Malley, Co-Founder and CEO of Paccurate to talk more about his growing company. Here is a snippet of our conversation.

  • How would you describe Paccurate?

Paccurate provides a packaging intelligence platform for retail brands and 3PLs that helps them reduce their shipping costs and environmental footprint, and make their customers happy.

  • What motivated you to start your company?

My co-founder and I started working on our “cartonization” engine as a side hustle to our freelance development practice, but it wasn’t until we got larger customers that we became fixated on this fairly niche area and made it our core focus. With these larger shippers, we began measuring the impact in hundreds of truck trips eliminated and acres of cardboard saved, and it’s really that environmental impact that keeps us motivated every single day.

  • What has surprised you about your company?

Growing Paccurate has made me obsessed with “boring” problems in supply chain that obscure massive value- ones that are overlooked by the big solution providers out there because they are non-traditional focus areas. It’s made our company culture a bit irreverent of prevailing traditional best practices in the space. However, I’ve been surprised how many like-minded people we were able to find just by getting our message out there.

  • What gets you out of bed in the morning? and What keeps you up at night?

Well, my toddler usually physically gets me out of bed very early, but I show up to work excited because of my team. We’re all committed to the mission and helping each other move the ball forward. Incidentally the toddler also keeps me up at night, but what I worry about as I fall asleep, like many others, is climate change. Paccurate can’t slow it down alone obviously, but we can have a quantifiable impact at least on our industry’s emissions. It raises the stakes for our company quite a bit.

  • What has been your biggest learning as a founder?

The biggest learning has been around how much of Enterprise SaaS is about relationships. Augmenting a mission-critical process for SMBs and Fortune 1000 companies is not like selling a to-do list app. Trust and credibility are paramount.
