A Letter From the Head of Great Big Story

When it comes to serving the community, Great Big Story knows we all have the ability to make a difference.
Our staff come from all different places, backgrounds and cultures — from international cities like Lisbon, Lima and Seoul to small towns like Colchester (England), Ada (Michigan, not Oklahoma!), Vancouver Island and beyond — but the one thing we have in common is we take pride in where we come from and we want to continue giving back as we set roots in new places.
Great Big Story is a place where the people believe in their potential to make a positive impact on the community. That’s why, for the third time this year, we’re closing down the office to organize a day of service.
Our core values were built on community and we’ve shown it all throughout the week across our site and social channels. Now it’s time to practice what we preach.
Today, we’ll be teaming up with CityMeals on Wheels to help the homebound elderly right here in our own backyard. We’ll be sending out teams of volunteers to package and deliver meals directly into the hands of those in need. And sadly, statistics show there are plenty of people who could use a little help.
According to the Foodbank of New York City, “Approximately 204,000 New York City seniors, or approximately one out of every five (20 percent), rely on soup kitchens and food pantries.”
Our goal is to lower that number, but we can’t do it alone. While we’re out volunteering, consider what you can do to support your community because it needs you more than you think!
